Are you in the process of decorating a room in your home and find you are just not sure if you should reupholster that sofa or loveseat or purchase a brand-new piece?
There are several reasons why reupholstering your favorite chair or sofa may be better than purchasing a new one. Often furniture that you've had in your home may have sentimental value to you. It could be that you have a sofa love seat that your grandmother gave you or perhaps it's a chair that has been passed down from generation to generation. If the piece is old enough to be considered an antique, it may also be very valuable. Whatever the reason, if the piece is important to you it just makes sense to keep it. A common problem people face when they go out looking for new furniture is they can't find a sofa or chair that will fit in the space they need to fill. Much of the new furniture today is larger than in years past. If you have a chair or sofa that is just right for your space, wouldn’t it be better to reupholster it? Is your current chair or sofa made with a hardwood frame? You may find your old furniture is much better constructed then most new pieces you will find in modern stores today. Don't panic! It is easy to make your old pieces look brand new again. A good refurbished furniture maker will offer a very large selection of fabrics to choose from. In fact, the selection will be much larger than the limited number of fabrics offered when you are buying a new chair or sofa. Keep in mind that a professional shop will not just apply new upholstery to a worn out pierce of furniture. They will first tear the piece of furniture down to its skeleton and make any necessary repairs to the frame. They will then cover the frame with new padding. All of this work should be done professionally and using quality materials. Only after these necessary first steps are completed will new upholstery be added. A professional upholstery shop will also note areas of your chair or sofa that receive the most wear. These they will cover in a muslin fabric before the final upholstery is put on. When you choose the cover fabric, make sure you coordinate the colors and design with other furniture in the room. You should also consider the wall colors and all other parts other parts of the room. Don’t worry, this is not as difficult as it may sound, especially when you consider the wide assortment of quality fabrics available. Is it cheaper to reupholster a chair or sofa? Not always. But first consider the quality as well as your sentimental attachment before you decide to replace. A brand-new chair or sofa may not cost as much as having your old piece reupholstered, but the new furniture may not last nearly as long as your older, high-quality chair or sofa.
